ADVISORY: Celebrate International Observe the Moon Night at the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center on Sept. 14
Hi Everyone,
Head to the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center (SMNHC) for a lunar eclipse talk, night-sky telescope viewing and much more on International Observe the Moon Night!
What: Established by NASA, International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide opportunity to learn about lunar science and exploration, take part in celestial observations, and honor cultural and personal connections to the Moon.
At SMNHC, jointly managed by Albuquerque Public Schools and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS), the fun kicks off at 5:00 p.m. when the gates open and visitors can go on a self-guided hike, explore the Center’s 1-room ecology museum, and do lunar activities. At 6:00 p.m., there will be a presentation on New Mexico birds of prey with live animals led by Laura McCann from Raptors of New Mexico Foundation.
Then at 7:00 p.m., NMMNHS Space Science Director Jim Greenhouse will lead a talk on the opposition of Saturn and upcoming lunar eclipse on September 17. Once the sun is down, explore the night sky with help from our new automated telescope that projects the cosmos onto a nearby monitor.
Admission is by donation, but parking registration is required as space is limited. Parking registration is available HERE .
Where: The Sandia Mountain Natural History Center, at 60 Columbine Ln., Cedar Crest.
When: 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Why: This event offers New Mexicans an opportunity to learn more about the Moon and participate in a worldwide celebration from the beauty of the Sandia Mountains!
Thanks, Stephen
