Hi Everyone,
Head to the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) for a series of documentaries about environmental hardships across the Southwestern United States and Latin America, inspired by the NHCC Art Museum’s new exhibition Nuclear Past, Present, and Future: Art in Action . The series kicks off with a screening of First We Bombed New Mexico (2023) on Sunday, May 3.
What: The documentary First We Bombed New Mexico tells the story of Tina Cordova, who leads the fight for justice for majority Indigenous and Latino Nuevomexicano communities in New Mexico, which have suffered for decades from radiation produced by the world’s first atomic test at Trinity. This is the first in a series of free documentary screenings at the Center this spring and summer, including Water for Life on June 7, and Green is the New Red (De la guerre froide à la guerre verte) on August 2. These matinee film screenings pair perfectly with a visit to the Visual Arts Museum, tickets are free for New Mexico residents on the first Sunday of each month. Visit nhccnm.org/events to learn more and get tickets. Where: NHCC Bank of America Theatre, located at 1701 4th St. SW When: Sunday, May 3. Future screenings are scheduled for the first Sunday of June and August. Why: These screenings, in conjunction with Nuclear Past, Present, and Future, offer a chance to explore the subject matter of environmental justice through multiple mediums in one afternoon.
