Seven influential art trailblazers will be recognized by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for the 2025 Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts.
What: The annual Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts will honor artists and a major contributor to the arts on Thursday, Oct. 16, 5:00 p.m. at the St. Francis Auditorium at New Mexico Museum of Art followed by a public reception in the courtyard with light refreshments. The recipients are: Peter “Amahl” Amaral, Albuquerque
Kevin Box, Cerrillos
Alden Timothy Cox, Bloomfield
Keshet Dance Company & Center for the Arts, Albuquerque
Cannupa Hanska Luger (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lakota), Glorieta
Nacha Mendez (Chihene Nde Nation), Santa Fe
Connie Voisine, Las Cruces
Additionally, an exhibition of works by the 2025 recipients will be on display in the Governor’s Gallery on the fourth floor of the Roundhouse, with an opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 16 from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. The exhibit will be on display until Dec. 26, 2025. Admission to the ceremony and exhibit is free.

Why: The annual Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts is a prestigious annual award that recognizes both individuals and organizations and acknowledges the considerable role, both economic and cultural, that artists, craftspeople, and arts supporters play in New Mexico. Nominations are reviewed by the New Mexico Arts Commission and the Governor. This year’s Awards are made possible in part by major contributions from Thornburg Investment Management, Catherine Oppenheimer, Gale Family Foundation, Ramon José Lopez & Nancy Nichols Lopez, Allen Theaters, Yates Legacy Foundation, Sheryl Parsley, Nancy Cooper & Curtis Porter, New Mexico Music Commission, and members of the New Mexico Arts Commission.
