ADVISORY: National Hispanic Cultural Center hosts Albuquerques first Poet Laureate for two-day poetry event

Hi Everyone,

As part of the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s (NHCC) Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, the Center is proud to host former Albuquerque poet laureate Michelle Otero for a free, two-day poetry reading and workshop on Sept. 26 and 28.

What: The event kicks off Thursday, Sept. 26 with a reading and book-signing celebrating Otero’s recent publication, Vessels: A Memoir of Borders . Exploring themes of identity, heritage, and the transformative power of storytelling, Otero’s poignant reflections promise to inspire and resonate whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast of great writing or simply curious about the depths of human experience.

The following Saturday, head back to the Center for writing workshop led by Otero, offering a unique opportunity for participants to explore their own voice and craft. Participants should bring their own writing materials. Both events are generously supported by AARP Albuquerque.

Who: Michelle Otero is the author of Malinche's Daughter , an essay collection based on her work with women survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Oaxaca, Mexico as a Fulbright Fellow, and Bosque: Poems , a collection written during her tenure as Albuquerque Poet Laureate. Her latest work, Vessels: A Memoir of Borders , was published by FlowerSong Press earlier this year. Otero is originally from Deming.

Where: NHCC Wells Fargo Auditorium on Thursday and the Domenici Education Building on Saturday, located at 1701 4th Street SW.

When: The reading begins at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26. The workshop will run from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Why: This two-day event offers the chance to not only meet one of Albuquerque’s most celebrated poetic voices, but also to learn from her work and experience.

Thanks, Stephen
