ADVISORY: National Hispanic Cultural Centers Bless Me, Ultima Noche de Familia brings film and fun for the whole family
Hi Everyone,
As part of the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s (NHCC) Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, the Center is proud to present a family-friendly evening focused on one of New Mexico’s most famous works of fiction: Bless Me, Ultima .
What: Head to the Center for a Noche de Familia inspired by Rudolfo Anaya’s beloved novel Bless Me, Ultima ! Craft a flapping owl hand puppet, design a drawing inspired by the novel, and use herbs or leaves to emboss clay creations. Free books and coloring books will be available. All ages and individuals will be welcome.
After the event, stick around and settle in for a free screening of the movie adaptation of Bless Me, Ultima in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre! Adapted for the screen by Carl Franklin, Bless Me, Ultima paints a vivid picture of rural New Mexico in the 1940s and tells the story of a young boy and the mysterious healer who opens his eyes to the wonders of the spiritual realm.
The Noche de Familia and film screening are generously supported by New Mexico Gas Company, and the pre-film talk by Ricardo Lopez is generously sponsored by Las Pistoleras Instituto Cultural de Arte and the UNM Department of English and Literature. Please register separately for each event at nhccnm.org/events .
Where: The National Hispanic Cultural Center, located at 1701 4th Street SW. The film screening will be held in the NHCC Albuquerque Journal Theatre.
When: 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27.
Why: With family-friendly crafts and activities, this Noche de Familia offers a chance to engage with one of New Mexico’s most popular stories in an original way!
Thanks, Stephen
