ADVISORY: New Mexico�s first female Secretary of State to be honored with historic marker on May 20
Hello Everyone,
What: The New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program, in collaboration with the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division (NMHPD) and other partners, invites the public to honor and celebrate Soledad Chávez de Chacón, New Mexico’s first female Secretary of State, on May 20 as her extraordinary accomplishments are commemorated with a historic marker!
The New Mexico Historic Women Marker Initiative launched in 2006. The program is a partnership of the International Women’s Forum - New Mexico, NMHPD, the Cultural Properties Review Committee, New Mexico Department of Transportation, and the public.
Who: Soledad Chávez de Chacón, elected in 1922 shortly after women were granted the right to vote, was New Mexico’s first female Secretary of State, a position that under the circumstances of the time required her to briefly serve as the Governor of New Mexico. Chávez de Chacón was also the first Hispanic woman elected to statewide office in the nation.
Where: The dedication will be held on the north lawn of the New Mexico State Capitol (411 S Capitol St) and the ribbon-cutting will take place outside the Bataan Memorial Building (400 Don Gaspar Ave).
When: Monday, May 20 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Why: This event provides an opportunity for New Mexicans to celebrate Soledad Chávez de Chacón’s remarkable life and groundbreaking achievements while learning more about the New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program.
