Hi Everyone,
More than an intricate and ephemeral artform, sand drawing in Vanuatu is a storytelling tradition, conveying folklore, history, genealogy, rituals and other forms of kastom (local, traditional knowledge). Sand drawing is a UNESCO-designated Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The exhibition features works created by Edgar Hinge, a sand drawing practitioner and museum educator from Port Vila, Vanuatu. WHAT: Opening events include Traditional “kastom” dancing, an opening “welkam” ceremony, and demonstrations of sandroing story performances by Sandroing Knowledge Bearers throughout the event. WHEN: June 29, 1-4 p.m. Schedule: 1 p.m. - Opening Remarks by Richard Shing 1:30 p.m. - Welcome Ceremony 2 p.m. - Performances: Traditional Kastom Dances 3:30 p.m. - Performance: Traditional Kastom Dance WHERE: Museum of International Folk Art, Museum Hill, 706 Camino Lejo, Santa Fe, NM WHY: Engage with a UNESCO recognized tradition and the first exhibition outside of Melanesia to focus on Vanuatu’s sandroing tradition.
