ADVISORY: Science Fiction or Fact? film series at the NM Museum of Natural History & Science returns this summer
Hi Everyone,
Beat the heat and explore the real science behind classic science fiction films as the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) Science Fiction or Fact? Film series returns this summer!
What: Science Fiction or Fact? is a family-friendly film series showing science-fiction blockbusters, familiar old classics, and everything in between like never before on the domed screen of the 55-foot NMMNHS Planetarium, Powered by Meta. Before each film, an educator, scientist, or special guest will discuss aspects of the film. The Museum’s new exhibit Sci-Fi & Sci-Fact will also be open to visitors beforehand.
This summer, the museum will be screening the 1951 classic The Day the Earth Stood Still on July 11. Frequently listed as one of the top 10 sci-fi movies of all time, this film tells the story of the landing of a spacecraft in Washington D.C. bearing a message of peace and tolerance - and ready to enforce it! Then, catch the groundbreaking early sci-fi film Forbidden Planet (1956) — the first science fiction film to depict humans traveling in a man-made, faster-than-light “starship” — on August 8.
Admission for both events is by donation. Visit nmnaturalhistory.org/calendar for additional information.
Where: The NMMNHS Planetarium, located at 1801 Mountain Road NW.
When: 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 11 and Thursday, August 8. The pre-film talks begin at 6:00 p.m.
Why: It’s a chance to explore familiar classic movies from a new perspective, while learning about the real science (or lack thereof) behind the fiction!
Thanks, Stephen
