The National Hispanic Cultural Center’s 20-foot-tall ‘Luminito’ structure inspired by New Mexico’s traditional holiday lights returns on December 14 to brighten up holiday spirit at the 2nd Annual Luminito Celebration.
What: Whether you call them ‘farolitos’ or ‘luminarias,’ the Center invites New Mexicans to celebrate our state’s distinctive holiday lights. On December 14, enjoy music, biscochitos, a holiday mercado with local vendors, Matachines dance performances, holiday lights, and more as we celebrate the holiday season! Additionally, this year’s celebration begins right after a special performance of Héctor Armienta’s The Farolitos of Christmas , a children’s opera presented by NHCC partner Opera Southwest. This free community event is made possible by Visit Albuquerque. Please pre-register online at nhccnm.org/events . Where: The NHCC Plaza Mayor, located at 1701 4th Street SW. When: 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14. Why: NHCC Executive Director Zack Quintero says, “We’re excited to share in this annual community event to celebrate with families and our gente. The conversation and thanksgiving debates over faralito or luminaria is a staple point of being New Mexican and that’s why we started this event by combining both and talking about the origins of our shared story in northern, central, and southern New Mexico. “We invite everyone to come to this event and share in the annual holiday lighting. Whichever term you prefer, this is your home to celebrate who we are as New Mexicans.”
