ADVISORY: Ukrainian Photography in the Time of War: The Work of Marta Syrko at Museum of International Folk Art

Hi Everyone,

Join contemporary Lviv-based photographer Marta Syrko (b. 1995) as she discusses her series Wrapping Art—Art of Salvation (2024), which debuted in MOIFA’s current exhibition Amidst Cries from the Rubble: Art of Loss and Resilience from Ukraine . WHAT: Against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion, Marta Syrko confronts the harrowing traumas inflicted upon her homeland, striving to ignite awareness and remembrance. The session will include a Q&A, allowing the audience to engage directly with the artist. Coinciding with Syrko’s visit will be the installation of the final three images from Wrapping Art—Art of Salvation , allowing visitors the opportunity to view the complete series of twelve. WHO: Marta Syrko is a Lviv-based photographer. Her poignant imagery serves as a testament to the ongoing struggle of safeguarding Ukrainian cultural patrimony and artistic traditions amidst the turmoil of military conflict. WHEN: Sunday, September 15, 2024, 2- 4 p.m. WHERE: Museum of International Folk Art, 706 Camino Lejo, Joan and Clifford Vernick Auditorium WHY: Amidst Cries from the Rubble: Art of Loss and Resilience from Ukraine delves into the heart of Ukraine’s struggle.
