Hi Everyone,
Sharpen your poetry skills at the National Hispanic Cultural Center during a free ekphrastic poetry workshop led by Albuquerque Poet Laureate Damien Flores on Saturday, Jan. 24.
What: A workshop on ekphrastic poetry – poetry inspired by works of art – led by Albuquerque Poet Laureate, Damien Flores. This workshop will help participants explore art through poetry via exercises inspired by the works of Italian writer Italo Calvino. Attendees will have access to PDF resources.
This event is part of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs’ 2026 Ekphrastic Poetry Contest, which is accepting submissions through Feb. 27. The workshop is a chance for those submitting their poems to participate, hone their skills, and learn something new before the deadline. learn more about the Poetry Contest at nmculture.org/poetry . This workshop is free to attend, but please register in advance.
Who: Damien Flores, Albuquerque’s Poet Laureate since 2024, garnered acclaim as a member of the National Champion Albuquerque Poetry Slam and University of New Mexico Loboslam teams. He is a multifaceted artist, excelling as an award-winning author, comedian, radio broadcaster, and educator.
In addition to hosting the Spoken Word Hour on 89.9 KUNM-FM, Flores is also an educator with more than 15 years of teaching experience in Albuquerque. Flores is an Albuquerque native and graduate of Albuquerque High and the University of New Mexico.
Where: The National Hispanic Cultural Center Intel Classroom, located at 1701 4th Street SW.
When: 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24
Why: It’s a chance to learn more about poetry and develop your voice while participating in the 2026 Ekphrastic Poetry Contest!
