Hi Everyone,
The Library of Congress has named Santa Fe poet Arthur Sze the 25th Poet Laureate of the United States , one of the nation’s highest literary honors. A visionary voice whose work spans more than five decades, Sze is the author of twelve acclaimed books of poetry and The White Orchard: Selected Interviews, Essays, and Poems (Museum of New Mexico Press, 2025). “Poetry has a crucial role to play in our lives, society, and the world. It helps us slow down, hear clearly, see deeply, and envision what matters most in our lives." — Arthur Sze Sze is no stranger to literary firsts: he was the inaugural poet laureate of Santa Fe and the first creative writing professor at the Institute of American Indian Arts . His work has garnered some of the most prestigious awards in American letters, including the National Book Award for Sight Lines , a Pulitzer Prize finalist distinction for Compass Rose , and the prestigious Yale Bollingen Prize for American Poetry . His poems have been translated into fifteen languages and celebrated around the world. With The White Orchard , Sze turns to the art of poetry itself—offering readers intimate access to his creative process, cultural influences, and decades of life in New Mexico. The book brings together Sze’s essays, poems, and conversations with fellow writers, creating what Erin Adair-Hodges, director of the Museum of New Mexico Press, calls “a visceral joy.” “ Vibrant and vital, his collected insights here have much to teach us beyond the writing of poetry, ” said Adair-Hodges. “As the U.S. Poet Laureate, Arthur Sze will be a thoughtful steward of the American poetic tradition at a moment when poetry’s truths are needed most.” Arthur Sze is a poet, translator, and editor who has lived in Santa Fe, NM, since 1972. He is the author of twelve books of poetry, including Into the Hush (2025) and The White Orchard: Selected Interviews, Essays, and Poems (2025); The Glass Constellation: New and Collected Poems (2021), which received a 2024 National Book Foundation Science + Literature Prize; Sight Lines (2019); Compass Rose (2014); The Ginkgo Light (2009), PEN Southwest Book Award and the Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association Book Award; Quipu (2005); The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970–1998 (1998), Balcones Poetry Prize and the Asian American Literary Award; and Archipelago (1995), which won an American Book Award. He also authored The Silk Dragon II: Translations of Chinese Poetry (2024) and edited Chinese Writers on Writing (2010).
