Burn Manager Certification Committee seeks two new members

State program helps build prescribed fire knowledge and capacity

SANTA FE – The Certified Burn Manager Certification Committee seeks two new members to help strengthen capacity for conducting prescribed burns on private lands statewide.

The committee is the guiding force for the New Mexico Forestry Division’s Certified Burn Manager Program , which trains private landowners at no cost to safely and effectively use prescribed fire on their property. Committee members review certification applications and help develop training courses, refresher courses and recertification processes during their two-year terms.

The committee seeks a nongovernmental organization member and a New Mexico Prescribed Fire Council member. Applicants must have at least two years of experience planning and implementing prescribed burns.

“The Certified Prescribed Burn Manager program was created with private landowners in mind,” said Prescribed Burn Coordinator Brian Filip . “More than 40% of New Mexico’s forests are privately owned, and we need landowners to get the training and join the wildfire risk reduction effort.”

Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis until the positions are filled. Submit nominations, applications or information requests to brian.filip@emnrd.nm.gov , or to:
