Upcoming Events - July and August 2024

The Department is excited to host various public events in the upcoming months.

No More Excuses! Safety First! Helmets and Goggles are Available to Youth Free of Charge.

Did you spend a lot of money on your child's dream machine recently? Are your kids looking to get out and explore the trails? Before they do, they must complete an approved OHV safety class. Throughout the summer, the Department is offering several opportunities for your family to take an OHV safety class.

In addition to obtaining an OHV safety permit, youth under 18, who pass an in-person, hands-on OHV safety class will be given a free helmet and goggles to ensure that they are safe before hitting the trails.

OHV in-person classes are currently scheduled in Los Lunas. There is also a motorcycle class scheduled in Albuquerque.

Outdoor Day at Ute Lake on July 27

Join Conservation Officers, State Park Rangers and other law enforcement officers at Ute Lake State Park in Logan, NM. Activities will include the Poach Coach, pellet gun trailer, archery, casting demonstrations and wildlife identification and water safety presentation.

The event is free and no registration is required. Participants will need to pay the $5 day use State Parks fee. Click here for more information .

Kids Fishing with a Cop

Conservation Officers will join officers from across the region and New Mexico Desert Dogs to present a day of fishing, fun and music at Lake Van in Dexter.

The event, schedule for July 27 from 8 a.m. to noon, is open to the public.

Hunter Education Day at Esther Bone Memorial Library in Rio Rancho

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is hosting a Hunter Education Skills Day at Esther Bone Memorial Library on Wednesday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is open to youth 10 to 17 years of age who have not yet passed a hunter education course. Participants will have the opportunity to earn their hunter education certification during this session.

This opportunity is free, and the course is a blended learning session.

For the first part of the session, students must complete their reading, quizzes and exam online at https://www.ilearntohunt.com/newmexico/ before the Skills Day (once registered a code will be provided so the student can take the online portion free of charge).

In part two, students who complete the required online portion will bring their completion certificate to the in-person session on July 31, hosted at the library. During the skills day, Department staff and certified volunteer instructors will be sharing their hunting knowledge and providing students the opportunity to learn how to safely handle deactivated hunting-style firearms, test their ethical shot placement and safe firearms handling skills with a shoot/don't shoot simulator, and have the unique opportunity to learn how to field dress and elk using the Department's new virtual reality field dressing simulator! Participants must bring their lunch, snacks and drinks for the day.

To qualify, participants must be at least 10 years of age at the time of registration and have not previously passed a hunter education course. Space is limited to 15 and will be filled on a first-come basis.

Each youth must submit a completed registration form to qualify. Registration opens on July 8 at 9 a.m. Before completing this registration form, each youth must have a New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Customer Identification Number (CIN) account. If the student does not have an account, please go to the Department's website to create one.

July 12: Wildlife Presentation at Octavia Fellin Youth Public Library in Gallup starting at 11 a.m.

July 12-14: Advanced Hunter Education Skills Camp near Folsom. Registration is currently open . Click here for more information .

July 13: OHV Class in Los Lunas. Space is limited, all students must register through their free Department of Game and Fish customer account. You can set up an account with the Department of Game and Fish here . Students must be at least 6 years of age.

July 19: Wildlife Presentation at Silver City Children's Library starting at 2 p.m.

July 20: Hooked on Fishing event in Hobbs starting at 9 a.m.

July 26-28: Hunter Education Camp near Tres Ritos, New Mexico. Registration is full. Click here for more information .

July 27: Kids Fishing with a Cop at Lake Van in Dexter starting at 8 a.m. Click here for more information .

July 27: Ute Lake Outdoor Day at Ute Lake State Park starting at 8 a.m.

July 31: Hunter Education Skills Day at Esther Bone Memorial Library - Registration opens July 8 .

August 3: Wildlife Presentation at Martha Liebert Public Library in Bernalillo starting at 11 a.m.

August 10 : Fly Fishing 101 class at Eagle Nest Lake State Park from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This class is presented by the Enchanted Circle chapter of Trout Unlimited in conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Game and New Mexico State Parks. Click here for more information .
