CORRECTED RELEASE: Raw frozen cat food recalled over Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

Raw frozen cat food recalled over Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Savage Pet has issued a voluntary recall of one of its products after it tested positive for the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus. Pet owners in New Mexico are advised to check lot numbers.

There have been no reports of HPAI in domestic cats in New Mexico related to exposure from pet food. However, state officials encourage pet owners who may have purchased the product to check the lot code on the packaging. The recalled product’s lot code is Lot. 11152026.

The recall is for Savage Cat Frozen Cat Food, Chicken, 84 oz. (packaged in boxes containing 28 - 3 oz. plastic packets of product), and 21 oz. (packaged in boxes containing seven - 3 oz. plastic packets of product).

Consumers who have purchased the recalled product should immediately discontinue feeding the product. If your pet shows any signs of illness, contact your veterinarian.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association , clinical signs of HPAI infection in domestic cats may include the following symptoms:

fever

lethargy

low appetite

reddened or inflamed eyes

discharge from the eyes and nose

difficult breathing

neurological symptoms such as tremors, seizures, incoordination or blindness

The product was distributed nationwide, and several New Mexico retail locations carry Savage Pet products. Savage Pet products are distributed by its parent company, Predator Pet Inc.
