New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department warns against mail scams

SANTA FE – The Taxation and Revenue Department warns the public of a recent mail fraud campaign alleging that property may be seized if overdue debt is not paid to a +800 number, as shown below.

All letters from the department have official letterheads and contain information about what steps the individual has taken to receive the letter, if any further action needs to be taken, and if there are any remedies available.

If you’re not sure if a letter came from the department, visit our secure Taxpayer Access Point at https://tap.state.nm.us/Tap to verify any overdue payment status.

Additionally, the Taxation and Revenue Department will call individuals with overdue payments after collections letters have been sent. Callers can verify that they are speaking to an agency representative by verifying a prior letter ID with the caller or calling the department’s call center back directly.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious mail to the department’s Tax Fraud Investigations Division by emailing Tax.Fraud@tax.nm.gov or calling the tax fraud hotline at 1-866-457-6789.

If a messenger is threatening you, contact your local law enforcement.

If you have any questions, call our call center at 1-866-285-2996, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
