Deer Canyon Fire -

Torrance County - Final update

Update: Yesterday and today, crews made good progress with fire suppression activities with support from aerial water drops, enabling resources to raise containment to 50%. Fire activity has remained low, and resources continue to secure the perimeter and mop up. Interior pockets are sending up some smoke, but do not pose a threat.

Evacuations have been lifted, and the structure threat has passed. This will be the last notification unless there are significant changes.

The Deer Canyon Fire was discovered at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 in the Deer Canyon subdivision south of Mountainair. Currently, the lightning-caused fire is estimated to be 117 acres and is 50% contained.

Evacuations / Shelters: Evacuations have been lifted.

Weather: Currently 96 degrees, 10% RH, southwest winds at 13 mph with gusts to 22 mph. Tonight, isolated sprinkles before 9 p.m.; mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 58; west wind 10-15 mph becoming light and variable after midnight.

Fuels: Grass, piñon-juniper.

Cause: Lightning.

Location: Deer Canyon subdivision south of Mountainair.
