Rio Grande Fire

Update: Lines on the north and south divisions of the Rio Grande Fire held through yesterday afternoon’s high winds, allowing containment to rise to 60%. Fire activity continued to decrease, although interior heat was found in heavy fuels causing ember wash. Evacuations were lifted for the area. Today, some resources are being released, and remaining crews will be focused on extinguishing interior heat. This will be the final notification on this fire unless there are significant changes.

The Rio Grande Fire was discovered at 3:53 p.m. on Thursday, April 17 on Bureau of Indian Affairs jurisdiction, west of Bosque Farms, in Valencia County. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Weather: Currently 38 degrees, 36% RH, southwest winds at 7 mph. Currently showers with thunderstorms possible after noon. Tonight, showers likely before midnight.

Evacuations / Closures: Evacuations have been lifted.

Acres : 59 via GPS mapping.

Containment : 60%
