Hi Everyone,
Visitors to the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) have just a couple more weeks to catch Voces del Pueblo: Artists of the Levantamiento Chicano in New Mexico – the groundbreaking art exhibition exploring work from six of New Mexico’s early Chicana and Chicano artists – before it closes on Sunday, Feb. 8.
What: Since opening in April 2025, Voces del Pueblo: Artists of the Levantamiento Chicano in New Mexico has showcased the work of six New Mexican artists who were among the early Chicana and Chicano activists in the state. All six artists were students at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas in the early 1970s when Chicano scholar Pedro Rodríguez was hired as the inaugural Director of Chicano Studies at NMHU. These young men and women became politically activated and proceeded to paint murals, produce art, and organize in New Mexico as part of the nascent Chicano civil rights movement that was unfolding nationally.
On Sunday, Feb. 8, the Center is hosting a free farewell celebration for the exhibition from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The celebration offers a chance to view the exhibition one last time, enjoy refreshments, and check out the catalogue.
Where: The NHCC Visual Art Museum, located at 1701 4th St SW.
When: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday – Sunday, through Sunday, Feb. 8.
Why: It’s a chance to celebrate the run of a successful art exhibition and explore the work one last time before it makes way for something new!
