MEDIA ADVISORY: Wild turkey conservation video released Monday, Nov. 25
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish released a video regarding wild turkey conservation efforts in conjunction with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) on Monday, Nov. 25. The short video, just over a minute long, is narrated by Department resident game bird biologist Casey Cardinal, and features both recent footage from the Department and NWTF as well as historic clips from the Department's archives.
A brief summary of the video states:
"Did you know that in the 1930s, there were only about 30,000 wild turkeys left in the U.S.? Thanks to conservation efforts, that number surged to over 7 million by 2010. Since 2014, more than 200 turkeys have been successfully translocated within the state to boost population numbers and ensure their long-term survival.
"As you gather around the table this Thanksgiving, remember that conservation efforts play a key role in maintaining healthy turkey populations for future generations. Support these efforts by purchasing a turkey license in fall or spring. Your purchase helps monitor and manage wild turkey populations, ensuring there are many more Thanksgiving meals to come!
