National Hispanic Cultural Center hosts two-day community symposium inspired by the work of Rudy Padilla on Feb. 2-3
Hi Everyone,
Building on the acclaimed art exhibition Into The Hourglass: Paño Arte From The Rudy Padilla Collection , the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) is leading a free two-day community symposium featuring local artists and organizations, a film screening and director’s Q&A, and more.
What: The Rudy Padilla Paño Project Community Symposium . The symposium begins on Friday, Feb. 2 with a reception and tour of Into the Hourglass , which celebrates paños as an art form and the contributions of incarcerated artists to the broader fields of Chicano and American art. At 7:00 p.m., the Center will host a screening of the documentary film Paño Arte – Images From The Inside followed by a Q&A with Director and Producer Evangeline Griego.
Then, head back to the Center on Saturday, Feb. 3 for a series of presentations by local organizations and an opportunity to meet artists featured in the exhibition. Participating artists include Nani Chacon, Eric “Christo” Martinez, Russell Urban, Eric J. Garcia, Maia Montes, and many more.
Both days are free to the public, with support from the Ford Foundation and the McCune Foundation. Visit nhccnm.org/events to learn more and register.
Where: The National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Art Museum for the reception and exhibition tour, the Bank of America Theatre for the film screening, and the Great Hall in the Pete V. Domenici Building for the symposium on Saturday.
When: 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, and 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3.
Why: Into The Hourglass: Paño Arte From The Rudy Padilla Collection has examined the role that incarceration plays in contemporary American society through the artwork on display. Now, the community symposium takes that exploration farther and offers a chance to learn from organizations doing related work.
Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re interested in learning more!
Thanks, Stephen
