AGING WITH PRIDE What is Pride? Each June, we recognize the resilience and ongoing contributions of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Two-Spirit (LGBTQ2S+) community during Pride Month. Pride began in remembrance of the 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn in New York City where LGBTQ2S+ patrons, led by transgender women of color, resisted a police raid. Today, Pride remains rooted in its history of protest, as well as a celebration of identity, visibility and community. LGBTQIA2S+ Older Adults LGBTQIA2S+ older adults often face unique challenges in a variety of ways: Discrimination & Stigma Lifelong experiences of rejection and marginalization from families or communities can contribute to higher rates of depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns (Source: National Alliance on Mental Illness )

HONORING JUNETEENTH
Celebrated each year on June 19, Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day” commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. New Mexico has observed Juneteenth as a state holiday since 2006 , recognizing it as a time to honor Black history, culture, and the continued pursuit of equality. Juneteenth celebrations often include storytelling and oral histories, music, dance, and food. These celebrations not only honor the past but also ensure that the wisdom and experiences of older African Americans continue to inspire future generations.
