DECEMBER IS SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD) AWARENESS MONTH
LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY
This time of year, many of us will gather around tables, in community spaces, and in the places where we find comfort and connection. But for far too many older New Mexicans, gathering can be stressful if they don’t have enough food. Food insecurity continues to affect seniors in every corner of our state. One in five older adults in New Mexico are at risk of experiencing food insecurity. Limited access to nutritious food impacts health, stability, and the ability to age with dignity. That’s why strengthening nutritional support remains one of ALTSD’s top priorities year after year.
If you haven’t visited your local senior center lately, I encourage you to stop by. Enjoy a meal, meet the staff, and learn about the range of resources and activities available. Many centers are now serving meals made with local ingredients through the New Mexico Grown Program. This program deepens the relationship between senior centers and communities by bringing fresh, locally sourced food directly centers, while supporting New Mexico farmers. Investments like New Mexico Grown show how the right support can have an impact on the well-being of our communities.
With the legislative session just weeks away, I want to assure you that ALTSD will continue pushing for increased funding and expanded access to meal services to ensure every older adult has reliable access to healthy food. No one should have to choose between paying for medication, heating their home, or having a nutritious meal.
Thank you all for the hard work you do as advocates, senior center workers, caregivers, and neighbors. Every meal you serve, every call you make, and every connection you foster helps New Mexicans stay supported in their communities. I am excited to head into 2026 alongside each and every one of you to continue this important work. With gratitude,
Cabinet Secretary New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department
