MENTAL WELLNESS MONTH
LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY
Happy 2026, New Mexico!
Next week the 2026 legislative session will begin. This year’s session is a critical opportunity for our agency to build on the progress we’ve made, and to continue strengthening supports for older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers across New Mexico into the future.
This session, we are requesting funding in a few key areas: Bolstering the aging network and the vital programs older adults rely on every day, including, senior employment, transportation services, respite services, and meals that feature New Mexico Grown produce.
Increasing engagement and outreach so that more New Mexicans are aware of the programs, services, and resources offered to them.
Enhancing emergency preparedness and response so that we are ready to help New Mexicans during times of public health emergencies, natural disasters, or unexpected service disruptions.
Expanding caregiver assistance for the New MexiCare program, so that more New Mexicans can remain in their homes and communities of choice for as long as possible.
Addressing immediate and evolving needs by securing investment into the Kiki Saavedra Senior Dignity Fund to support direct care services for New Mexico’s older adult population and respond strategically to data-driven needs.
We encourage you to get involved during the session. Stay informed and reach out to your legislators. Come join us on February 13th for Senior Day to use your voice and help ensure that policy decisions being made at the roundhouse reflect the needs and experiences of New Mexicans. For more information about Senior Day or our legislative priorities, you can visit our website aging.nm.gov.
Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to New Mexico's older adults, adults with disabilities and caregivers. I look forward to working with all of you to help support healthy aging here in the Land of Enchantment. With gratitude and resolve,
Cabinet Secretary New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department
