LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY
As we welcome the sunshine and longer days of June, I want to take a moment to honor the incredible caregivers in our communities. Caregiving is often a quiet act of love, but its impact on the lives you touch is tremendous.
I am especially excited to share that in July, we’ll be rolling out information about the new Kinship Caregiver Pilot Support Program , a new initiative designed to support grandparents and other relatives raising children in 5-7 counties across the state. The program will connect eligible caregivers with essential services and supports, such as benefit counseling, legal assistance, mental health support and respite care.
Creating a safe and respectful environment for our aging population starts with awareness, resources and connection. By supporting caregivers and staying engaged with the older adults in our lives, we can all make a difference. That’s why I am personally inviting you to join us for the 47th Annual Conference on Aging ~ EngAGE as you Age, taking place September 23-25, 2025, in beautiful Glorieta, New Mexico. This year’s event will feature impactful trainings, engaging seminars, and outdoor fun including pickleball, miniature golf, basketball, stargazing and maybe even some ziplining and more!
I look forward to personally connecting with you this summer as I continue to visit Senior Centers and Long-Term Care facilities across the state. Wishing you a month filled with connection, sunshine and support.
Warm Regards,
JUNE IS ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH
You can help prevent abuse, neglect and exploitation. If you suspect someone is experiencing harm, speak up. Contact Adult Protective Services at 866-654-3219 or visit aging.nm.gov/protecting-adults to submit a report. Here are some common signs that may indicate someone is experiencing harm: Signs of Abuse: Unexplained injuries, such as scratches, cuts, bruises, burns, broken bones, or bedsores. Other serious signs of abuse include forced confinement, sexual abuse, or verbal and emotional mistreatment.
Signs of Neglect: Malnutrition, dehydration, over or under medication, poor hygiene, or unsafe and unsanitary living conditions. In some cases, neglect can include individuals being left without basic necessities like heat, running water, electricity or access to medical care.
Signs of Exploitation: Exploitation involves the misuse of an older or disabled adult’s resources for personal or financial gain. Some warning signs may include sudden loss of income or property, missing Social Security or SSI checks, unauthorized use of joint bank accounts, or the disappearance of valuables.
