CELEBRATING SENIOR NUTRITION MONTH
LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY
Every March we recognize Senior Nutrition Month. This annual occasion provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the role that nutritious food plays in our overall well-being. Food is not only sustenance; it is a way for us to connect with others, to share our traditions, and to care for our bodies. For older adults, the benefits of nutritious meals are both immediate and long-term. Sharing a meal can reduce isolation, foster joy, and strengthen community. Consistent access to healthy foods can also help prevent and manage chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. Reliable nutrition can make the difference between an older adult thriving at home or facing preventable health challenges. Despite the importance food plays in all our lives, many New Mexicans struggle to reliably access good food. Our state continues to experience some of the highest rates of food insecurity in the nation, and many older adults—especially those living in rural and tribal areas—encounter additional barriers to accessing it, such as limited transportation and grocery options. These challenges are part of why we work so hard to strengthen programs that provide older adults with nutritious meals. Through partnerships with the Area Agencies on Aging, senior centers, tribal providers, and community organizations, we support programs like New Mexico Grown that bring healthy New Mexico food into communities. Today, 178 senior center sites utilize the New Mexico Grown program, and in 2025, we served over 3.8 million meals to older adults at 210 senior sites across the state. Ensuring that older adults continue to have access to the nourishing foods they need takes all of us. Volunteer at a local meal program, advocate at the legislature for policies that address hunger, or support efforts in your community that help expand access to healthy foods. When we invest in nutrition, we invest in healthier communities, reduced healthcare costs, and a stronger New Mexico for generations to come. Together we can ensure that every older adult has the nourishment they need to live with health, dignity, and independence. Thank you for being a partner in this important work. Warmly
Cabinet Secretary New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department
SERVING UP SOLUTIONS-SENIOR NUTRITION MONTH
As we get older, our nutritional needs change. Many older adults benefit from focusing on nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy. Adequate protein helps preserve muscle strength, while calcium and vitamin D support bone health. Staying hydrated is just as important, even when thirst signals are less…
