NATIONAL FAMILY CAREGIVERS MONTH
LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY
Caregiving is one of the most profound ways we show up for one another. Every day across New Mexico, thousands of families, friends, and neighbors provide care for each other without recognition. Whether that is cooking a meal, picking up medication, providing transportation, or just offering companionship, this work sustains our communities. At the Aging and Long-Term Services Department, we see caregivers as true partners in our mission. Programs like New MexiCare and the Veteran Directed Care Program are designed specifically to support those who give so much of themselves. Whether you need some help finding respite care, want additional training, or simply need to connect with someone who understands, our compassionate staff at the Aging and Disability Resource Center are here for you.
This November, as we celebrate National Family Caregivers Month, we honor the dedication that caregivers bring, as well as the critical role they play in our long-term care system. As we look ahead to the upcoming legislative session, I encourage you to share your stories with your senators and representatives. Your stories and voices help us advocate for the funding and programs that strengthen caregiving supports in our state. Thank you for being partners in this work. Together, we can ensure that every caregiver and care recipient has the support they need to thrive. With gratitude,
Cabinet Secretary New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department
NATIONAL FAMILY CAREGIVERS MONTH
Every November, we celebrate National Family Caregivers Month. It’s a time to recognize and thank the millions of people who care for their loved ones, especially older adults who need help with daily tasks. Caregivers make it possible for older adults to stay in their homes, stay safe, and enjoy life with dignity. Their work is important, and it deserves to be seen and appreciated.
This month, take time to say thank you to a caregiver you know. A few simple ideas: Write them a thank-you card
Offer to help with a small task
Give them a break, even just for an hour
Simply tell them, “You’re doing an amazing job”
Caregivers spend so much time helping others. Let’s make sure they feel cared for, too.
If you are a caregiver or know one, have you heard of our New MexiCare Program? Here at Aging & Long-Term Services we know the importance of caregiving and have designed a program to support caregivers and help aging adults and adults with disabilities stay in their homes as long as possible.
