New Mexico awarded $1.2M federal grant to expand respite care
SANTA FE – New Mexico has been selected to receive a competitive $1.2 million national Lifespan Respite Grant from the Administration for Community Living.
The grant, to be distributed over three years, is sponsored through the federal government and will be overseen by the Long-Term Care Division of the Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD).
Respite care offers temporary relief to primary caregivers, allowing them time to rest and recharge.
“With this grant, we’ll be able to expand access to respite services and strengthen the network of support for caregivers across New Mexico,” said Emily Kaltenbach, ALTSD Cabinet Secretary. “This investment recognizes the vital work already being done, as well as the continued need to help caregivers avoid burnout and sustain the care they provide to loved ones.”
Through this grant, ALTSD will: Increase public awareness of respite care programs available statewide.
Expand community-based respite services for families caring for adults with chronic conditions, including Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
Support additional training opportunities for respite care providers and family caregivers, particularly those living in rural and tribal communities.
As part of this initiative, ALTSD has partnered with the Alzheimer's Foundation of America to co-sponsor monthly webinars designed for caregivers and health professionals. The webinars are free to the public and focus on Alzheimer's and dementia education. Professionals who participate can receive continuing education units for attending.
“We are thrilled about the opportunity to partner with the Alzheimer's Foundation and provide support to those doing the hard work of caregiving every day,” said Dr. Angelina Flores Montoya, ALTSD Deputy Cabinet Secretary. “Through initiatives like these, we are creating more ways for caregivers to connect with education, resources and community and helping them feel less alone as they care for their loved ones.” For more information on the monthly webinars, visit aging.nm.gov/long-term-care/nmtraining/
