MVD brings NM driver’s licenses and state IDs to mobile devices
NM IDs can now be securely added to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet
SANTA FE – The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division today announced that New Mexico driver’s licenses and state IDs can now be added to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, enabling residents to seamlessly and securely add and present their IDs using their mobile device for some purposes.
Today, users can present their ID in Apple Wallet and in Google Wallet in person at select TSA checkpoints across the country, participating businesses and venues, in addition to Apple Store locations across the U.S. Users are also able to present their ID in select mobile apps as well.
In the coming weeks, support for mobile driver’s license (mDL) acceptance will come to TSA checkpoints at Albuquerque Sunport and at the Lea County Regional Airport near Hobbs, so users will also be able to present their mDLs at even more locations within New Mexico.
“Having a cell phone and mobile device with you at virtually all times is simply a fact of life these days. This new capability adds one more level of convenience for us all,” said Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke.
As part of the launch of mobile driver’s licenses in New Mexico, b usinesses and organizations that must verify customer age will also be able to accept mobile driver’s licenses — including IDs in Apple Wallet and IDs in Google Wallet— using mobile apps such as the newly introduced NM Verifier on iOS. Starting today, the app will be offered for free by MVD in coordination with the New Mexico Regulation & Licensing Department (RLD). The app securely and privately accepts mobile driver ’ s licenses and ID cards — right on iPhone, with no additional hardware needed.
New Mexico mobile driver ’ s licenses and state IDs do not replace physical licenses or identification cards, as they are an optional addition to those credentials. New Mexicans must still carry their physical licenses when driving.
“ We ’re excited to be among the first states to make mobile driver’s licenses available to users, and we’re excited to bring even more convenience and security to our residents with this innovation,” said MVD Director Htet Gonzales.
