Hello everyone,
How do you capture a moment in time before it becomes history? As part of the commemoration of the United States’ 250th anniversary, residents across New Mexico are invited to help answer that question by deciding what should be preserved in an official commemorative time capsule for future generations to discover. Now underway through March 9, NM Spirit - the state’s official 250th anniversary campaign. is encouraging New Mexicans statewide to participate in a brief public survey to weigh in on the capsule’s contents. The survey asks participants to rate a curated list of items representing contemporary life, culture, and identity across the state. Items include a sealed vial of sand from White Sands National Park, contemporary Native art, a copy of the New Mexico state constitution, and much more. Participants may also submit one additional recommendation for consideration. Residents can take the survey at: https://forms.gle/PMD2t5uhC4weQMcD9 Once the voting period closes, results will be compiled and presented to the New Mexico Semi-Quincentennial Commission, who will review the findings and vote on the final selections on March 12. The initiative gives New Mexicans a unique opportunity to contribute to a historic milestone, helping ensure the time capsule reflects the diverse voices, cultures, and experiences that define the Land of Enchantment at this moment in time. About the New Mexico Semi-Quincentennial Commission The New Mexico Semi-Quincentennial Commission was established in 2023 by the New Mexico Legislature through Senate Bill 106 to plan, promote, and implement the state’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As the nation observes this historic milestone in 2026, New Mexico reflects on its diverse heritage and evolving stories of independence. The Commission invites all New Mexicans to participate in honoring the past, engaging with the present, and envisioning the future. About NM Spirit NM Spirit aims to bring New Mexicans together to reflect on the state’s shared history and cultural vibrancy while encouraging statewide participation in this once-in-a-generation commemoration. Through partnerships with schools, nonprofit organizations, tribal communities, local businesses, and cultural institutions, the initiative will support events, educational programming, and cultural activities that highlight New Mexico’s diverse heritage.
