Tax & Rev recognized for oil and gas compliance tool

Department automates collection of production, lease data

SANTA FE — The national Federation of Tax Administrators has recognized the New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department with its Innovation and Excellence in Tax Administration Award for the department’s new automated oil and gas compliance tracker.

The award was presented at the FTA Annual Meeting on June 10, 2024, in Long Beach, Calif.

The new tool combines oil and natural gas production and lease data from two other state agencies and the federal government. It enables the department to more efficiently develop revenue forecasts, identify compliance trends without costly and time-consuming audits, and accurately set tax rates for the natural gas processors tax.

The department developed the tool with the help of RS21, an Albuquerque-based data science company.

“This is one of those moments where we get to say we are working smarter and more efficiently to better serve New Mexico,” said Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke. “A big shout-out goes to RS21 and to our staff who developed this project.”

“The award is a testament to Taxation and Revenue’s innovative use of technology to enhance public services and outcomes for New Mexico. RS21 is thrilled to support the department in harnessing the power of data and setting new standards of excellence,” said RS21 President and CEO Charles Rath.

A public version of a new dashboard created with the tool is available on the department’s web map portal . The portal is available on the Gross Receipts Location Code and Tax Rate Map page found in the “Governments” menu at tax.newmexico.gov.
