Economic Development Department awards 8 SBIR Matching Grants
State supports new technologies with grants of up to $100K
SANTA FE, N.M. — The Office of Strategy, Science and Technology has awarded SBIR Matching Grants to eight technology companies with active federal funding to boost technologies in advanced energy, aerospace, advanced computing, and bioscience, New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) Secretary-Designate Rob Black announced today.
The Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Matching Grant is available to New Mexico-based for-profit science and technology companies with active federal funding in either program. The grant specifically supports startups with a scalable business model that can grow and diversify New Mexico’s economy.
“EDD is excited to support these dynamic New Mexico companies, demonstrating that New Mexico continues to be a leader in science, technology, and innovation. These companies are solving unique problems for society, developing technology for clean energy and national defense, while creating good-paying jobs here at home,” Secretary-Designate Black said.
The 2025 awards were increased to a maximum of $50,000 for companies with an active Phase I SBIR/STTR grant and $100,000 for companies with an active Phase II SBIR/STTR. The higher award amounts are made possible with the support of the Legislature and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.
Companies receiving a $100,000 match for phase II:
8D Photonics LLC (Rio Rancho) delivers advanced solutions for the infrared (IR) and semiconductor industries with its 8D IR Pioneer art tool for cryogenic semiconductor wafer mapping. This technology enables precise measurement for pre-screening wafers prior to fabrication.
OAM Photonics LLC (Albuquerque) develops, makes, markets, and sells cost-effective, superior performance, compact, and lightweight LiDAR sensors for small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to serve civilian and defense markets.
Osazda Energy LLC (Albuquerque) has developed a product to provide solar-cell-crack-tolerant metallization, fortifying solar panels against extreme weather events. Osazda is also developing a software design engineering platform to optimize the performance of solar panels.
Palladias LLC (Los Alamos) is developing resins to extract critical minerals crucial to national defense and energy independence. These resins provide efficiency and environmental sustainability for the mining industry, including resins for nuclear processes and direct lithium extraction (DLE) brines.
Solstar Space Co. (Santa Fe) is pioneering the use of Space Wi-Fi for all types of on-orbit assets. Solstar provides a secure internet connection between spacecraft and Earth-based payload managers and satellite operators, and enables communications for crewed missions in sub-orbit, LEO, cis-lunar, and lunar surface operations.
Companies receiving a $50,000 match for phase I:
Aperi Computational Mechanics Consulting LLC (Peralta) is developing an engineering analysis software that will transform the simulation of extreme events such as explosions, landslides, avalanches, car crashes, and other structural failures.
Weka Biosciences LLC (Santa Fe) is developing an innovative natural polymer-based separation system to enhance the safety and efficiency of chemical and pharmaceutical production processes.
Space Kinetic Corp. (Albuquerque) is building an electromechanical system that integrates onto a host spacecraft and deploys smaller assets without directly using consumable propellant, providing lower-cost and operationally flexible maneuvers through space. Space Kinetic is a New Mexico Lab-Embedded Entrepreneur Program Fellow.
