NMCD re-launches heavy equipment operator program

Program offered at women’s prison in Springer, New Mexico

SPRINGER - The New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) is excited to announce the re-launch of the Heavy Equipment Operator program at the Springer Correctional Center (SCC). This program is the result of a partnership between the Department of Workforce Solutions (DWS) and its Northern Area Local Workforce Development Board (NALOWDB).

The program spans 16 weeks. During that time, students will work to complete bookwork as part of a National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified course. They will also receive hands-on training with DWS contracted instructors. Participants are required to have a high school diploma and maintain good conduct at SCC.

"This Heavy Equipment Operator program not only provides these individuals with valuable training and certified qualifications, it empowers them with the skills they need to secure meaningful employment opportunities upon reintegration into society. We are also thankful the Department of Workforce Solutions will work with the individuals to find employment.” said NMCD Cabinet Secretary Alisha Tafoya Lucero

“With billions of dollars in state and federal funding coming to improve New Mexico’s infrastructure, we need to make sure that the jobs and careers this money will create are available to everyone, even if they made some mistakes in their past.” said DWS Cabinet Secretary Sarita Nair . “We are thrilled to be part of this partnership with NMCD and NALOWDB. Together, we will help these folks get the skills they need to be successful when they return to the community.”

Currently, eight inmates are enrolled in the program.
