Letter from the Director

The New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division (ORD) attended the inaugural National Outdoor Recreation Executive Forum, hosted by the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable in Washington, D.C., last month.

This bipartisan, principal-level event convened CEOs, trade associations, and state directors of outdoor recreation with agency leaders, governors, and members of Congress. The purpose was to lay the groundwork for expanding the outdoor recreation economy as a catalyst for social, environmental, physical, mental, and economic health for generations to come.

It was an honor to represent outdoor recreation for New Mexico at the event, alongside Representative Gabe Vasquez, Senator Martin Heinrich, and Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland.

Concluding the week, the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division and members of the Confluence of States participated in a biking send-off for veterans embarking on a cycling journey across America's trails.

The collective voice of the outdoor recreation industry is powerful, diverse, bipartisan, and generates significant benefits for our people, economy, and beautiful outdoor spaces.

What an honor it is to represent New Mexico!

Current New Mexico Wildfires and seasonal safety updates

The New Mexico Forestry Division has been updating the public on two wildfires that are requiring the attention of federal, state, and local resources in New Mexico. The Blue 2 and Indios fires are burning on public lands and are being managed by a Complex Incident Management Team and the US Forest Service, respectively. The Blue 2 fire is located in the White Mountain Wilderness, approximately 8 miles North of Ruidoso, NM. The Indios Fire is 7 miles north of the village of Coyote, NM and the fire has been predominantly driven by topography in steep, rugged terrain in the Chama River Canyon Wilderness. There are evacuations in effect for Blue 2 and some closures to be aware of for both fires in the Lincoln National Forest and the Santa Fe National Forest that will affect outdoor recreation.

Keeping in mind the high potential for wildfire exists throughout the state this time of year, the Forestry Division would like to remind everyone to be safe and aware of their surroundings. When heading into the great outdoors, always check the weather and what restrictions are in place in advance. New Mexico State Parks fire restrictions are posted on the New Mexico Fire Information website .
