$10 million in New Mexico Child Tax Credits remain unclaimed

23,900 eligible families can still claim missed refunds

SANTA FE — Approximately 23,882 families in New Mexico are still eligible for $10.7 million in child tax credits they didn’t claim in 2023 and 2024.

In August, the Taxation and Revenue Department notified families that didn’t claim the child tax credit but appeared eligible for $100 or more. Since then, 7,334 new and amended returns have been filed, delivering $3.7 million in child tax credits to taxpayers.

To be eligible for the child tax credit, taxpayers must be New Mexico residents with qualifying children and not be dependents of others. Credits per child range from $25 to $622, depending on income.

“New Mexico’s child tax credit helps eradicate child poverty by putting money back in the pockets of families with children. We want every family eligible to claim the credits they’re owed,” said Taxation and Revenue Department Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke.

Taxpayers can file or amend returns for free on the secure Taxpayer Access Point website at: https://tap.state.nm.us .
