Automatic voter registration begins July 1
SANTA FE—Starting July 1, eligible voters will be automatically registered to vote when completing a driver’s transaction with the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD).
Previously registered voters’ information will also be automatically updated with the Secretary of State and county clerks through the MVD.
Individuals will receive a letter from their county clerk with information on their voter registration, what districts they are able to vote in, how to opt out of voter registration, and more, after the automatic update.
Visit SOS.NM.GOV/AVR for a detailed FAQ page and more information about the automatic voter registration process in New Mexico.
Passed during the 2023 legislative session, HB4 expanded voting rights protections in New Mexico. Included in this bill was automatic voter registration. New Mexicans have had the option to register or update their voter registration information when completing a driver’s transaction with MVD since the early 1990s.
