New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department warns against text message scams

Agency will never send text messages demanding payments, personal information

SANTA FE – The Taxation and Revenue Department warns the public that it will never send taxpayers text messages about a tax or motor vehicle issue in which payment is demanded or soliciting personal information.

Such scam text messages, as shown below, are being reported in New Mexico, as well as in other states.

The public is encouraged to report the number or send a copy of any suspicious text messages to the department’s Tax Fraud Investigations Division by emailing Tax.Fraud@tax.nm.gov or calling the tax fraud hotline at 1-866-457-6789.

If a caller or messenger is threatening you, contact your local law enforcement.

The Taxation and Revenue Department will only call individuals who have not already reached out for assistance to collect overdue taxes after collection letters have been sent. Callers can verify that they are speaking to an agency representative by verifying a prior letter ID with the caller or calling the department’s call center back directly.

If you receive any communications allegedly from the department requesting additional information, such as providing “valid payments,” and you are not certain if it has come from the department, visit our secure Taxpayer Access Point at https://tap.state.nm.us/Tap and follow the letter’s instruction on where to input information.

Make sure that the website is the department’s official website by going to https://www.tax.newmexico.gov/ and selecting Online Services and then Taxpayer Access Point TAP.

All letters from the department have the official letterhead and contain information about what steps the individual takes to receive the letter, if any further action needs to be taken, and if there are any remedies available.

If you have any questions, call our call center at 1-866-2996, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
