New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division warns against continuing scams and fraud
SANTA FE – New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department’s Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) warns about a wave of scam text messages falsely claiming to be from MVD or local government agencies.
The MVD does not contact customers via text, email, or phone call to issue threats or demand payment. Any such message is fraudulent, and New Mexicans are urged not to respond, click on links, or share any personal or financial information.
These text messages are not from MVD or local governments in New Mexico. New Mexicans should not reply, use any links, or provide any information in response to these scams. Many of the text messages are coming from an international phone number.
New Mexicans may report the email, text message, or phone number to your email or phone carrier and delete them. If a caller is threatening you, you may contact local law enforcement.
MVD will only contact customers by mail on official letterhead and will always provide remedies and contact information to fix the issue. If you ever question a letter’s authenticity, contact MVD at https://www.mvd.newmexico.gov/ or calling 1-888-683-4636.
