Aging Department to present budget at legislature SANTA FE – Next week, the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department will ask lawmakers to approve a $109.7 million budget for fiscal year 2027, which focuses on expanding senior services and supporting caregivers. “This budget reflects what we’re hearing from communities across New Mexico: older adults, adults with disabilities and caregivers need reliable services they can count on,” said Emily Kaltenbach , Department of Aging secretary. “By investing in caregiving, meals and transportation services today, this will help us keep older New Mexicans safe, mobile and supported tomorrow.” ALTSD’s budget within the executive recommendation includes several strategic investments aimed at meeting the growing needs of New Mexico’s aging population. These key priorities include: Sustaining and expanding direct services through the aging network, including transportation, meals, respite care and health promotion.
Expanding caregiver assistance, with a focus on programs that help New Mexicans remain safely in their homes and communities of choice.
Addressing immediate and evolving needs through investments in the Kiki Saavedra Senior Dignity Fund to support direct care services for New Mexico’s rapidly growing older adult population.
Enhancing emergency preparedness and response to ensure rapid deployment of resources during public health emergencies, natural disasters or unexpected service disruptions.
Promoting senior engagement and public awareness through statewide events like the Conference on Aging.
ALTSD will present its budget request to the House Appropriations and Finance Committee on Jan. 21, at 1:30 p.m.

The New Mexico Aging & Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD) was established in 2004 to provide resources, connection and advocacy for seniors and adults with disabilities. The department oversees the state’s Area Agencies on Aging to elevate the quality of care at senior centers, offers advocacy through the Long-Term Care Ombudsman volunteer program, and provides intervention through the agency’s national award-winning Adult Protective Services. Additionally, ALTSD houses the state’s Aging and Disability Resource Center, which offers options counseling, education, and connection to resources.
