Botulism outbreak leads to nationwide recall of infant formula

SANTA FE, NM – The New Mexico Department of Health is alerting the public to stop use of any ByHeart whole nutrition infant formula immediately.

Manufacturers of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula are removing their product from store shelves in New Mexico and nationwide after the product was linked to 15 cases of infant botulism in 12 states.

Botulism is a disease that causes difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death. New Mexico currently does not have any confirmed cases.

“Once symptoms start, botulism can quickly become a medical emergency,” said Dr. Chad Smelser , New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) deputy state epidemiologist. “Any infant with signs of botulism should be evaluated by a medical professional immediately.”

Signs of botulism in infants can take a couple of weeks to develop and include:

Constipation

Poor feeding

Drooping eyelids and sluggish pupils

Weak sucking

Weak or altered cry

Lethargy

A “floppy” appearance (due to poor muscle tone)

Difficulty breathing

If untreated, these symptoms may progress to cause paralysis of the respiratory muscles, arms, legs, and torso and subsequent death.

If you suspect your infant has botulism, seek immediate medical attention .

Parents with non-urgent questions can call the NMDOH Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773).
