Dangerous heat wave to hit New Mexico this weekend

Temperatures may reach up to 107°F

SANTA FE – Dangerously high temperatures are forecast across New Mexico this weekend, with many areas in northern and southern parts of the state expected to reach over 100°F and up to 107°F through Sunday.

The New Mexico Department of Health advises residents to take steps to protect themselves and others — particularly those most vulnerable to heat-related illness.

“Since April 1 there have been over 500 emergency department visits related to heat illness around the state,” said Chelsea Eastman Langer, bureau chief of the New Mexico Department of Health’s (NMDOH) Environmental Health Epidemiology. “Vulnerable populations, including children, adults over 65 years of age, outdoor workers, and those with chronic health conditions are at greatest risk.”

Heat-related illness symptoms include:

Cold, pale, and clammy skin.

Fast, weak pulse.

Nausea or vomiting.

Muscle cramps.

Tiredness, weakness or dizziness.

Headache.

Passing out.

Precautions everyone should take:

Stay cool inside and/or in shade when possible.

Keep window shades drawn during the day to help keep the heat out.

Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.

Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day.

Never leave children or pets in the car.

Plan to go somewhere with air conditioning, such as a library or friend’s house.
