Flip open the cover of El Palacio magazine and you’ll discover award-winning writing and features that capture the heart of New Mexico. The New Mexico Press Women just recognized the nation’s oldest museum-related magazine with several awards for editing, writing, photography, and podcasting.
New Mexico Press Women, which was established in 1949 to inspire and celebrate professional communicators and promote the highest ethical standards, presented El Palacio with six awards at its 76 th annual conference at Isleta Resort on March 31. El Palacio , a publication of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, received a pair of first place awards including Editing for Print or Online Publications, Magazine/Magapaper for “Jean Toomer’s Search for Identity in Taos,” edited by Emily Withnall and Single Photography on any Subject for “Sand & Stone” by Cara Romero. “For more than a century, El Palacio has informed and inspired readers with creative and scholarly storytelling about New Mexico’s abundant culture, history, and art,” said Debra Garcia y Griego, Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Cultural Affairs. “This recognition from the New Mexico Press Women highlights El Palacio ’s enduring contribution to preserving New Mexican history and creating an important archive of our state’s arts and culture. We are proud of the magazine's dedication to showcasing the work of our agency and its commitment to remaining relevant to readers who value our state's rich heritage.” Both award-winning features are being submitted to the National Federation of Press Women’s conference in September, according to El Palacio Editor Emily Withnall, who says, “ El Palacio remains relevant to readers concerned about the erasure of history, by preserving New Mexican history, and creating an important archive of the arts, history, and culture of our state for people who live here and beyond.” El Palacio also received three second place awards: Specialty Articles, Agriculture for “From Disability to AgrAbility: Horse Training with Adaptive Technology” by author Leah Romero and Print or Online Publications Regularly Edited by Entrant, Magazine/Magapaper for El Palacio , Fall 2024 (awarded to Art Director David Rohr and Editor in Chief Emily Withnall). The agency’s podcast, Encounter Culture , also received a second place award for Web and Social Media, Podcast (awarded to Producer Andrea Klunder and Host Emily Withnall). The magazine also received a third place award: Feature Story, Magazine, Newsletter/Other Publication for "Returning Home: Two Sovereign Nations Reclaim Land Following U.S. Government Extraction, Removal, and Displacement" by author DezBaa'.
