Santa Fe, NM – New Mexico Historic Sites is commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a multi-site pop-up exhibit, “Celebrating 250 Years of Diversity & Resilience,” beginning July 4, in honor of Independence Day. All eight sites, located across the state, will feature a small banner exhibit exploring themes of common ground and historical identity, independence, and New Mexico’s contribution to the United States. “The banners will help us open the door on New Mexico’s past,” said Anne McCudden, executive director of New Mexico Historic Sites. “They highlight the stories of perseverance, cultural continuity, community building, and self-determination across New Mexico. The exhibit encourages visitors to consider how New Mexico’s past has shaped the nation and continues to inform on its future.” What you will learn at each New Mexico Historic Site: -- Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner Historic Site: Recognizing Tribal Sovereignty and Documents of Independence -- Coronado Historic Site: Communities of the Middle Rio Grande Valley, circa 1776 -- Fort Selden Historic Site: Indigenous Perspectives and Perseverance -- Fort Stanton Historic Site: The 9th Cavalry and the 1876 Centennial Celebration --Jemez Historic Site: Strength and Resilience of the Jemez People -- Lincoln Historic Site: Documenting the Battle of Sierra Blanca -- Los Luceros Historic Site: The Genízaro Past -- Taylor-Mesilla Historic Site: Life Along El Camino Real in 1776 Together, these stories unveil the many ways New Mexico communities experienced, influenced, and responded to the events and ideas that shaped the United States over the past 250 years.
