Albuquerque, NM – Listen to the work of writers published in the summer 2025 issue of El Palacio magazine. The issue recognizes the power of art as a practice, livelihood, and a way of forging relationships with the self and within the community, and celebrates the unique history of New Mexico.
Please join us on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 2 p.m. at National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Salόn Ortega, 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque, NM, for a reading panel and conversation about three featured articles in El Palacio’s summer issue, including Lazarus Letcher’s article about Cathay Williams’ unusual decision to dress as a man to join the Buffalo Soldiers in New Mexico in 1867. The reading will also feature RoseMary Diaz’s article about the deep scientific and cultural knowledge of astronomy held by Native people in North America both historically and today, as well as an article by Navajo Nation Poet Laureate Jake Skeets, who writes about artist Chris E. Vargas's reimagining of museums as sites of creation.
The all-star lineup of writers in the Summer 2025 issue of ElPalacio also includes NYT correspondent Simόn Romero, writing about his artist mother, Janet Stein Romero; acclaimed novelist and memoirist Jamie Figueroa writing about Dr. Greg Cajete's devotion to the practice of art making; poetry by former Albuquerque Poet Laureate Michelle Otero; and an article by writer and anthropologist Gina Rae La Cerva about an Aboriginal Australian artist collective.
