Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program opens for applications
SANTA FE – Income-eligible seniors and families can soon apply for farmers’ market benefits that provide $30- 50 in fresh produce benefits this summer, part of a state program that connected nearly 28,000 New Mexicans with local farmers last year.
This seasonal program, provided by the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH), helps connect income-eligible seniors (60 and older, or 55 and older for Native Americans) and WIC families with locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. The program for seniors also includes local honey. Active and eligible WIC families automatically qualify for the benefits.
In 2025 nearly 28,000 seniors enjoyed access to healthy food through the program while 636 farmers statewide took part in the program.
“Eating a healthy diet is key to thriving at every stage of life,” said Dr. Miranda Durham , chief medical officer at NMDOH. “It’s one of the best ways to protect yourself against chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. And for farmers participating in the program, it’s a great opportunity to connect to the community and contribute to the well-being of New Mexicans.”
Starting Sunday, Feb. 15, seniors can apply online nmwic.org/fmnp or pick up a paper application at their local senior center or Public Health WIC office. Starting July 1, WIC families can apply at their local public health WIC offices. People needing assistance can call 505-469-0548, email doh.fmnp@doh.nm.gov or visit the State WIC office at 2040 South Pacheco Street in Santa Fe.
These benefits are first come, first served based on available funding, so apply early. Farmer’s market benefits will be distributed starting on July 1.
