May is the perfect time to celebrate New Mexico’s nurses

SANTA FE — Nurses contribute to health in multifaceted ways as educators, innovators and caregivers , and are an essential part of our healthcare system.

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) recognizes May as National Nurses Month and May 6-12 as National Nurses Week. In addition, May 7 is National School Nurse Day.

“I want to personally thank all the nurses who work at NMDOH and in other healthcare settings across the state,” said Gina DeBlassie , NMDOH Secretary. “Taking time to offer our gratitude and recognition of the nurses in our communities is the least we can do for people who have devoted their careers to support and even save our lives.”

The theme of this year’s Nurses Week is “The Power of Nurses.” It is a time to encourage healthcare professionals, employers, community leaders and the public to recognize and appreciate the vast contributions and positive impact nurses have made around the world.

“Nurses play a vital role in optimizing health, advancing health equity and ensuring people have access to care and the ability to lead healthy lives,” said Heather Black , Chief Nurse for NMDOH’s Public Health Division. “I join Secretary DeBlassie in thanking all of the nurses who work tirelessly across New Mexico.”
