New Mexico Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program returns
Food program starts 25 th season
SANTA FE – The Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program, which provides benefits for eligible seniors and families in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC) is returning Saturday Feb. 15.
This seasonal program, provided by the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH), helps connect income-eligible seniors (60 and older, or 55 and older for Native Americans) and WIC families with locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. The program for seniors also includes local honey.
“Eating a healthy diet is key to thriving at every stage of life,” said Dr. Miranda Durham , Chief Medical Officer at NMDOH. “It’s one of the best ways to protect yourself against chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.”
Starting Saturday, Feb. 15, seniors can apply online or pick up a paper application at their local senior center or Public Health WIC office. Starting July 1, WIC families can apply through their local WIC clinic or public health WIC offices. People needing assistance can call 505-469-0548, email doh.fmnp@doh.nm.gov or visit the WIC office at 2040 South Pacheco Street in Santa Fe.
These benefits are first come, first serve, so apply early. Farmer’s market benefits will be distributed starting on July 1.
