Safe Sleep campaign includes free Pack ‘n Play

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health is giving free Pack n’ Pay portable cribs to all parents and caregivers with children under 2 years of age who complete a free Safe Sleep Ambassador training.

The initiative is part of a new Safe Sleep campaign to reduce the risk of sudden unexpected infant death and other sleep-related infant fatalities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 3,700 sleep-related infant deaths occurred in the United States in 2022.

“A Pack 'n Play and 30 minutes of training can save a life,” said Dr. Miranda Durham, Chief Medical Officer for the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH). “Every infant in New Mexico deserves the safest possible start in life.”

Upon completion of the training, parents and caregivers will understand the essentials of a safe-sleep environment, including:

Always place infants on their back for sleep.

Use a firm, flat surface free of pillows, toys, and loose bedding.

Encourage supervised tummy time when infants are awake.
