RELEASE: Find out about “The Secrets in Sunlight” on Science Saturday at New Mexico Museum of Space History on May 30 Explore the hidden colors of the universe
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 12, 2026 MEDIA CONTACT Greg Gurule DCA Communications Manager Greg.gurule@dca.nm.gov 505-469-9730 Alamogordo, NM - Science Saturday shines light on how astronomers study the sun and other celestial objects on Saturday, May 30, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the New Mexico Museum of Space History. In collaboration with Sunspot Observatory, this month’s program will feature hands‑on sundial and filtered‑light activity, guiding visitors through experiments that show how colored filters block some wavelengths of light while allowing others to pass through. By experimenting with filters, families will see how astronomers use this same technique to isolate specific wavelengths of light and uncover details that would otherwise be invisible. Those methods help astronomers identify different gases, measure temperatures, and explore features on the Sun and other celestial objects. The activity offers an accessible, kid‑friendly version of the methods scientists rely on in professional observatories. Sunspot will provide all of the materials needed for the demonstrations. Science Saturday: Secrets in Sunlight is included with regular museum admission and is designed for all learners regardless of age.
