State awards $24.8 million to fund nearly 200 correctional officer positions
SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) committed $24.8 million to bolster public safety by funding 189 new correctional officer positions, delivering critical support to 22 local entities and the New Mexico Corrections Department.
Th is significant investment will help offset the cost of new correctional officer salaries for three years, reinforcing the state’s commitment to enhancing the security of its correctional facilities and safeguarding New Mexico communities.
“ This $24.8 million investment is a clear message that New Mexico is serious about public safety and the well-being of both our communities and those who serve them, ” said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.
"We're distributing crucial public safety recruitment funds at an unprecedented pace, given the new programs just started on July 1st," said DFA Cab. Secretary Wayne Propst. "The results are clear, we've already funded 190 firefighters and EMTs, and now 189 Correctional Officers. While our role in public safety recruitment is new, DFA is proud to make a meaningful contribution."
“Correctional officer recruitment is essential for upholding safety within our facilities,” said NMCD Cab. Secretary Alisha Tafoya Lucero . “By investing in these positions, the state reinforces its commitment to public safety and our agency mission to strengthen New Mexico communities."
Correctional officer recruitment funding is part of DFA’s public safety grants to boost the ranks of law enforcement, police support staff, and fire and emergency services. With these programs, DFA funded nearly 1,000 police officer positions across the state, 316 law enforcement staff positions, and 190 firefighter and EMT positions.
